June 20, 2006 (Update) --
Transport Canada will conduct a screening commencing on May 29, 2006 of the project:
Construction of Dykes, Vic Lake Tailings Management Facility, Saskatchewan.
Construction of two relatively small, engineered containment dykes (dams) at the south end and west side of Vic Lake. Vic Lake will serve as a Tailings Management Facility (TMF) for tailings generated during the operation of the GLR Resources Goldfields Open Pit Mine. Dykes will increase the containment elevation of the lake to 235 m and will be constructed out of clean waste rock with a 60 mil High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) liner proposed as the primary containment system. Scope of the project includes the construction, operation, maintenance and decommissioning of the dykes.
Under section 5 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, an EA is required for this project because Transport Canada may issue an approval under paragraph 5(1)(a) of the Navigable Waters Protection Act.
This project is also being assessed by the Government of Saskatchewan.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency will act as the Federal Environmental Assessment Coordinator for this environmental assessment.
