NOTICE OF COMMENCEMENT

of an environmental assessment

Ukkusiksalik National Park, Operational Facility, Repulse Bay, Nunavut

Repulse Bay (NU)

March 15, 2007 (Update) -- The Parks Canada Agency will conduct a screening commencing on November 17, 2006 of the project: Ukkusiksalik National Park, Operational Facility, Repulse Bay, Nunavut.

Parks Canada is obligated to build an operations centre in Repulse Bay as outlined in the UNP IIBA article 12.6.2. An operations centre gives UNP parks staff a place to work in which to operate the park effectively and safely. The operations centre gives a presence not only on a local level but also at the regional, territorial, national and international stage. The proposed plan includes the construction of one - one storey building; being the administration, transient unit and garage/storage building which is approximately a total of 395 sq. m. This office building will house work space for 5 full time UNP Parks Canada staff and 1 full time Government of Nunavut staff plus 2 spaces for seasonal staff. This building would house the visitor reception area, vestibule, janitorial room, mechanical room, washrooms, kitchenette, temperature controlled room for the server, secure storage for firearms/ av equipment, map/publication room/viewing deck, herbarium cabinet, and photocopier/fax/printer and paper storage area, transient unit requires space for a vestibule, kitchen, dining, living room, 1 bedroom and washroom laundry facilities plus garage to house truck, boat, the snowmobiles, ATV, mechanical room, gear/equipment for park patrols/rescue, parking for the truck with overhead door, work bench with tool storage and large size lockers.

Under section 5 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, an EA is required for this project because the Parks Canada Agency is the proponent for the project.
