March 8, 2007 (Update) --
Transport Canada will conduct a screening commencing on February 23, 2007 of the project:
Berry Creek Dam Rehabilitation, Alberta.
The existing dam on Berry Creek that created Carolside Reservoir was constructed in 1948 with further upgrades in 1963. Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation is now proposing the following upgrades:
- Increase the potential storage capacity of the reservoir by raising th dam 0.3 m
- Increase the auxiliary spillway capacity by the construction of a fuse plug spillway where the current overlow weir exists
- Enhancing the capacity of the dam and spillway outlet to resist erosion by the addition of larger riprap
-Flatten the downstream slope of the dam by the extension of the low level outlet and the addtion of a berm on the slope of the dam
- Repair concrete defects in the concrete spillway and low level outlet.
Under section 5 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, an EA is required for this project because Transport Canada may issue an approval under paragraph 5(1)(a) of the Navigable Waters Protection Act.
