BEPCo. Canada Company - EL 2407 Exploration Drilling Program

Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency
Public Notice

Proposed BEPCo. Canada Company Exploratory Drilling Project

Availability of Participant Funding

BEPCo. Canada Company is proposing an exploratory drilling project on the Scotia Slope (Exploratory Licence 2407), located approximately 190 km offshore from Halifax. The company is proposing a multi-year, multi-well drilling program. It is anticipated that one exploratory well will be drilled per year between 2005 and 2007.

The project is subject to a comprehensive study assessment under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. Pursuant to subsection 21 (1) of the Act, the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board (CNSOPB), as the federal responsible authority for the project, is currently inviting the public to comment on the proposed scope of the project.

The Government of Canada, through the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, is providing up to $25,000 to assist groups and individuals to take part in the assessment of the proposed exploratory drilling program. To receive funding, successful applicants must take part in the public consultation sessions during the assessment and/or in the review of the completed comprehensive study report. They must also sign a contribution agreement with the Agency.

The allocation of federal funds will be made on the basis of funding applications received at the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency no later than July 12, 2004.

Should the Minister of the Environment determine, at the conclusion of the review of the project scope and upon the recommendation of the responsible authority, that the proposed project be assessed instead under an independent environmental assessment review panel, the comprehensive study participant funding will be withdrawn. A new fund will be established and the public will be invited to re-apply.
