Geographically
widespread, the Board serves the western Newfoundland region
from Bartlett's Harbour in the north, Port Aux Basques to Francois
in the south, Baie Verte Junction in the east and Cape Anguille
in the west. Within this region, there is a population of about
91,000.
SERVICES
ADDICTION
SERVICES
Through this
program, education and treatment for alcohol, drug and gambling
addictions are offered to those addicted and those affected
by addictions. Services include: addiction awareness training
and counseling; educational sessions for individuals, families,
workplace and community groups; and outpatient treatment services.
In addition, a three week provincial inpatient treatment program
(Humberwood) is offered for people with substance abuse problems.
COMMUNITY
HEALTH DIVISION
This division provides programs for people of all ages in private
homes, clinics and in community sites. Programs inform, educate,
assess, and support individuals in the community and offer screening,
referrals, and follow-up services. Programs include: child health
care (such as childhood immunizations, vision/hearing screening,
and education sessions on nutrition and childbirth); a communicable
disease program which helps to reduce the amount of contagious
diseases in the community (such as chicken pox, head lice, scabies,
measles, and HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases); continuing
care; home nursing care; and prenatal/postnatal programs.

COMMUNITY
SERVICE DIVISION
This division
offers the following services: child welfare to children, youth
and their families, including early intervention, prevention
and crisis intervention; community corrections for young persons
in conflict with the law; and family and rehabilitative services
for children and adults with disabilities and their families.
FINANCE
AND ADMINSTRATION DIVISION
This division
provides financial and administrative support within the Health
and Community Services board including finance, human resources,
information systems and purchasing.
HEALTH
PROMOTION, PROTECTION AND RESEARCH DIVISION
Health
Promotion, Protection and Research works to provide and maintain
the highest level of health and well being to individuals,
groups, and the community through programs such as:
cervical screening, diabetes education, environmental health,
health education, nutrition, and reproductive health.
MENTAL
HEALTH SERVICES
Education,
assessment and intervention services are offered for individuals
and their families with mental health/mental illness related
issues. The services provided include: education; assessment
and intervention, including individual, family and group therapy;
counseling; and a supportive work environment through the
West Lane Recycling Program for individuals with a mental
illness.
REHABILITATIVE
SERVICES
Through
these services, education, assessment and intervention, as
well as health promotion and prevention activities are offered
in: developmental psychology for children from birth to age
five who exhibit or are at risk of developing developmental
problems; speech-language pathology for preschool children
and adults; audiology (for people who are at risk of developing
hearing problems); and occupational therapy which is home-based.

Breast Health Centre at St. Clare's.

Screening Program in Western Newfoundland.

at the province's Public health Laboratory are
leading the way in the fight against cervical
cancer.
We
have Primary Health Care Enhancement Projects
at Port aux Basques, Twillingate and
Happy Valley-Goose Bay to search out new ways
of delivering health services in a team environment.
In
1998, there were 113,993 admissions to hospitals
in the province.
In
1998, there were 17,447 general surgeries, 590
cardiovascular surgeries and 4738 orthopedic
surgeries.
