Welcome to Economic Zone 9

The Long Range RED Board is operated by a volunteer board of directors, an Executive Director, and an Executive Assistant. Throughout the year, additional support staff is provided through federally and provincially funded programs and through the work placements from the region's post-secondary educational institutions.

The staff works closely with the local development agencies, government and the private sector, to identify opportunities in the Zone 9. The zone encompasses 51 communities from from the South West Coast to Port au Port Peninsula all the way to Highlands.

Bay St. George South

Bay St. George was probably the first permanently settled area of Western Newfoundland. The fine natural harbour of St. George’s attracted the French fishing fleets in the 1600s and eventually settlers to Sandy Point, a small island a few hundred metres offshore. Sandy Point was the commercial centre of the West Coast of Newfoundland during the 1700s and 1800s, but declined in prominence with the completion of the Trans-Island Railway in 1897. The island is presently uninhabited. St. George’s click here for more...
