Stone to Europe, software to Silicon Valley, kosher wine to New England. These
are just a few of the products that businesses in all parts of our province
are making, right here, right now, in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Our economy has grown more than 24% since 1996. We have
the strongest employment growth in Canada; in 2001 our employment grew at
three times the national average. Some of these gains
are due to a growing oil and gas industry, a revitalized fishery, a buoyant
mining industry and rising pulp and paper prices.
But the real reason for our success is the
individual efforts of thousands of people, particularly
business people and community groups, who provide the products and services that
create the jobs that pay salaries and taxes. On these pages you will meet just a few of the business people who are
helping to diversify our economy and create jobs in rural Newfoundland and
Labrador.
Each of these people typifies the best qualities of the people of
Newfoundland and Labrador. Each is resourceful, independent and determined, and
each has taken an idea and exploited it to create a business opportunity.
