The
region serviced by the Central East Health Care Institutions.
Board extends from Terra Nova to Glenwood, including all coastal
communities from Salvage to Port Albert. The Board's boundaries
encompass Change Island, Fogo Island, and Strong's Island to
Crow Head to Pike's Arm. The Board provides services to a population
of about 45,000.

BROOKFIELD
BONNEWS HEALTH CARE CENTRE
The Brookfield
Bonnews health Care Centre comprises two facilities - Brookfield
Hospital and Bonnews Lodge. Brookfield Hospital is a 12-bed
facility providing primary care services, physiotherapy, laboratory
and X-ray services, and ultrasound to the residents of the Bonavista
North region of the province. Bonnews Lodge, a 45-bed nursing
home, has been merged with the hospital. This nursing home provides:
consultative services; daycare; laundry services; long-term
care; meals on wheels; pastoral care; physician clinics; recreation;
and 24-hour nursing.

JAMES
PATON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
This 100-bed
hospital at Gander is the regional referral centre. It is a
busy acute care institution offering the following range of
services: ambulatory care; emergency; diagnostic, including
a Picture Archiving
and Communications System to the satellite hospitals in Fogo,
Twillingate, and Brookfield, as well as CT and bone densitometry,
surgical program (general surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology);
obstetrics/gynecology;
pediatrics; internal medicine and primary care.

This
hospital is currently undergoing a major redevelopment with
a primary focus on the critical care areas. The redevelopment
will be completed in 2003.

FOGO
ISLAND HOSPITAL
This facility
is a 12-bed community hospital that offers the following services:
emergency; outpatient unit; primary care; laboratory and X-ray
services; including ultrasound, to the residents of Fogo Island.
Plans are underway to construct a new, combined acute and
long-term care, 20-bed facility.

LAKESIDE
HOMES
This is
a long-term care facility at Gander providing care and service
for 102 residents. In addition to nursing and medical services,
a full range of on-site services is offered including social
work, physiotherapy, recreation therapy, and a business office.
Pastoral care and volunteer services are also available and
enhance the quality of life. Meals on wheels is a service
to the community provided from Lakeside Homes. A respite care
bed is also available for community use. Residents requiring
level II-IV nursing care utilize the 102 beds. There is a
protective care unit with 26 beds for those with Alzheimer's
Disease and related disorders. Lakeside is primarily utilized
by senior citizens but, in exceptional circumstances, consideration
is given to admitting people under age 65.

NOTRE
DAME BAY MEMORIAL HEALTH CENTRE
This centre,
located in the town of Twillingate, is a 49-bed facility consisting
of a 32-bed long-term care unit, a 15-bed medical unit and
a two-bed coronary care unit.

Outpatient
and emergency services are also offered and clinics are scheduled
for specialists' visits in orthopedics, general surgery, psychology
and speech language pathology. A pilot project in primary
heath enhancement is in place allowing for the coordination
of care and teaching students/staff. A Wide range of support
services are available, including: social work, physiotherapy,
recreation therapy, dietetics, chemotherapy, respite care,
diabetes education and diagnostics. Health and Community Services
is located within the health care facility and provides health
promotion and protection services.

physicians services are provided to clinics on St. Brendan's
and Change Islands. Private practices exist at the Gander
Memorial Building and the Northeast Plaza in Gander, as well
as Eastport.
