The province's marine sector is a significant contributor to the provincial
economy with 16% annual growth over the past three years. Local advantages include
international companies with established products and services; international
collaborative commercial and scientific relationships; educated, motivated and
stable professional and technical workforce; and extensive research capabilities
and infrastructure.
The department commissioned a Marine Technology Development Strategy for
Newfoundland and Labrador to provide a basis for identifying policies, programs
and initiatives to support the development of the sector. Work is ongoing and
the implementation of the strategy is under way.
The department supports the sector
by:
working on development and promotion initiatives with key
stakeholders including: Oceans Advance, Nati,
Canadian Centre for
Marine Communications, Memorial University, the
Marine Institute,
the City of St. John's, C-CORE, as well as the
federal government,
including NRC Institute for Ocean Technology, NRC
Industrial
Assistance Research Program, Industry Canada, and
ACOA.
supporting local companies to participate in trade shows
and
conferences; and
partnering with other agencies to assist firms.
