  AquaGIS

The Aquaculture Geographic Information System (AquaGIS) is operated/maintained by the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture and:   

  • Provides information for aquaculturists and other waterway users;
      
  • Shows location of all licenced aquaculture sites in the province, along with latitude and longitude.

  Biological

The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture has three Aquaculturists on staff:  

  • Salmonid Aquaculturist
      
  • Shellfish Aquaculturist
      
  • Marine Finfish Aquaculturist

These aquaculturists provide biological support to growers in many ways,       including:  

  • Fish Health sampling,
      
  • Facilitating husbandry projects,
      
  • Data gathering and analysis on several research projects, and
      
  • Field assistance

 

  Regulations

The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture is governed by the Aquaculture Act and the Aquaculture Regulations. All persons or companies in possession of an aquaculture licence issued by this Department must abide by the rules and regulations stated under the Aquaculture Act.

  Technical

The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture has qualified and experienced staff that provide guidance to aquaculturists across the province, related to:

  • business plans,
      
  • licence applications, or
      
  • new gear types

 

  Aquaculture Health Unit

The Department has a full time Aquaculture Veterinarian and a Lab Technician on staff and a Fish Health Lab:

  • Based in Bay d’Espoir to service the salmonid industry
      
  • Lab is fully operational with incubators and bacterial diagnostic equipment
      
  • Veterinarian services the entire province and all aquaculture species
      
  • Veterinary Field Agent provides assistance from the St. John’s office
