Provided to Support Environmental Stewardship
A new program to promote environmental stewardship in
communities is being launched in Newfoundland and Labrador. The
Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Environment and Conservation,
today presented Ocean Net with a cheque for $20,000 in support of its
Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Action Team (NEAT) program.
The minister reaffirmed that funding for the NEAT program is consistent
with government’s commitment, as outlined in the Climate Change Action
Plan 2005, to partner with other groups to raise awareness about
environmental issues. “This government is honouring its commitment by
providing assistance to Ocean Net to implement valuable public education
and outreach programs,” said Minister Jackman.
“One of the main goals of the NEAT program is to empower communities to
take responsibility and initiate activities that protect the
environment,” said the minister. “This program will provide an
opportunity for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to demonstrate that we
care about protecting our environment and natural heritage. We all have
a responsibility to do our part to help ensure a healthy and clean
environment for ourselves, our children and grandchildren.”
Minister Jackman noted that 2007 marked the 10th anniversary year for
Ocean Net. “I want to congratulate Ocean Net on celebrating its 10th
anniversary. I also extend congratulations to the chair, Robert O’Brien
and the newly appointed Board of Directors, and to the many volunteers
whose efforts and dedication to promoting and protecting our environment
are to be commended. Working to ensure a healthy environment and vibrant
communities is certainly a reason to celebrate.”
