In the early 1960s the Department of
Fisheries began constructing fisheries facilities for fishermen throughout the province.
There were
332 of these facilities built over a 25 year period. These
include: |

The Department empowers local fishermen
and Fishermen’s Committees to manage the use of these facilities for
the benefit of users. Fishers through their local committees,
establish the rules and administer the day-to-day operation of the
facilities. They take a lead role in providing maintenance and repair
services for the facilities and obtain funding from various sources,
including the Department. In 1990, Government decided that community ownership of these facilities was the preferred alternative to government operations and a divestiture program was instituted. Fish plants and marine service centres, were divested primarily to private companies, while other facilities were transferred to Fishermen’s Committees or other community based organizations. The Department currently owns 98 fishery facilities. (See list attached.) |
