Divestiture Program
In the early 1960s the Department of Fisheries began constructing fisheries facilities for fishermen throughout the province. There were 332 of these facilities built over a 25 year period.  These include:

       Marine Service Centres

       Regional Ice Plants

       Baited Trawl Facilities

       Fish Plants

       Community Stages

       Small Boat Slipways

       Marine Haulouts

       Gear Sheds

       Miscellaneous

The Department empowers local fishermen and Fishermen’s Committees to manage the use of these facilities for the benefit of users. Fishers through their local committees, establish the rules and administer the day-to-day operation of the facilities. They take a lead role in providing maintenance and repair services for the facilities and obtain funding from various sources, including the Department.

In 1990, Government decided that community ownership of these facilities was the preferred alternative to government operations and a divestiture program was instituted.  Fish plants and marine service centres, were divested primarily to private companies,  while other facilities were transferred to Fishermen’s Committees or other community based organizations.

The Department currently owns 98 fishery facilities. (See list attached.)
