Beer = 5% ethyl alcohol by volume
Table Wine = 7-14%
Fortified Wine(e.g. Sherry) = 20%
Distilled Spirits(e.g. Whiskey) = 40%

12 oz. = 1 ½ oz. = 5 oz.

Effects

Ethyl alcohol is a sedative drug that causes:

  • initial relaxation
  • loss of inhibitions
  • impaired co-ordination
  • slowed reflexes and mental processes
  • impaired judgement

ALSO:

  • effects are increased by minor tranquillizers and other depressants
  • overdose may lead to death


Long Term Effects

  • Most organs of the body are adversely affected by heavy long-term use
  • particular risks include:

-certain cancers of the gastrointestinal tract
-cirrhosis of the liver
-brain and nerve damage
-gastriris, pancreatitis
-physical dependence can occur
-fertility affected in males
-heart disease


Alcohol and Pregnancy


The use of alcohol during pregnancy can cause several abnormalities in the baby that together are known as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. There does not presently appear to be any level of drinking which can be considered "safe" for expectant mothers.


Alcohol and the Law


Alcohol may not be sold to persons under 19 in Newfoundland and Labrador. It is a criminal offense to operate a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol or any other intoxicant.
