The Forest Fire Protection Centre opened in 1986 and is located in Gander, NL. It is operated by the Eastern Region of the Regional Ecosystem Management Division, Department of Natural Resources.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

The Facility has a Two-Fold Purpose:

  Regional Forest Fire Control Centre - Coordinates communications and assignment of resources between forest fires occurring in Eastern Region

  Provincial Forest Fire Equipment Bank - Responsible for purchasing, maintaining, storing and distributing most equipment used for the suppression of wildfires

The Responsibilities of the Forest Fire Protection Centre:

  Regional Forest Fire Co-ordination
  Helitack Crew
  Dispatch of Aircraft for Forest Fire Suppression
  Equipment acquisition, transfers, and maintenance
  Provincial Hose Processing Facility
  Meeting and training facilities

Helitack Crew

The Forest Fire Protection Centre serves as a base for a regional Helitack Crew. This two person crew responds to forest fire reports in the central part of the Eastern Region; generally within Forest Ecosystem Management Districts 4, 5, 6 and 8. The crew also has access to a fire truck to respond to fires in and around the Town of Gander and Gander International Airport.


Aircraft

There are three types of Aircraft based in the Eastern Region for Forest Fire Suppression:

  Three Canadair CL-215’s (Water Bombers)

Locations:
- 1 at St. John's
- 2 at Gander
  One Cessna 337 Skymaster (Spotter Aircraft), located at Gander
  Two Bell 206L Long Rangers (Helicopters)

Locations:
- 1 at St. John's
- 1 at Gander

Staff

Staff positions include:

  One Conservation Officer III
  One Forest Ranger II
  One Equipment Repair Technician
  Two Clerk Typist III’s (Dispatchers)
  Five Conservation Officer I's
  One Radio Maintenance Technician

Provincial Hose Processing Facility

has state of the art machinery where hose is cleaned, tested, repaired and packaged for storage and shipment. Any length hose up to 6 inches in diameter can be repaired. The Newfoundland and Labrador Hose Processing Facility is an economical alternative to the costly replacement of fire hose and couplings.
