Census Districts and Sub-districts

Online Help

The list of links below will help researchers find the census districts and sub-districts enumerated in the 1911 census. Knowledge of the district and sub-district(s) is helpful for finding individual households within a community since this is not a nominally indexed database (it is not searchable by family name).

The following pages also provide access to detailed maps from the Electoral Atlas of the Dominion of Canada - as divided for the tenth general election held in the year 1904 printed by the Government Printing Bureau in 1906 to show federal electoral boundaries. Most of the electoral districts described in this atlas are similar to the 1911 census districts. These electoral maps provide researchers with a geographic representation of the districts that were enumerated in 1911. Since Alberta and Saskatchewan both became provinces of Canada in 1905 (one year after the general election) the electoral atlas differs greatly in relation to these two provinces. The districts of Macloed, Medicine Hat, Red Deer and Victoria in Alberta and Battleford, Moosejaw, Prince Albert, Regina, Saltcoats, and Saskatoon in Saskatchewan are not represented by individual maps. Further more, Assiniboia in Saskatchewan has two maps (Assiniboia East and Assiniboia West) while Saint John City and County in New Brunswick also has two maps attached, one for Saint John City and County and a more detailed map of Saint John City.

The census districts are organized by province:
