Statement by Prime Minister Harper on National Acadian Day

15 August 2006
Ottawa, Ontario

Today, Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the following statement about National Acadian Day, which was officially recognized by the Canadian Parliament in June 2003.

“One hundred and twenty-five years ago, more than 5000 Acadians gathered in Memramcook to establish the Société nationale de l’Acadie and to declare August 15 National Acadian Day. More than a century later, this celebration of Acadian pride continues to bring together Acadians from across Canada and other parts of the world.

“More than 400 years after the birth of Acadia, the history and the achievements of Acadians remain a source of pride and inspiration for Canadians and for all peoples who have had to band together to ensure their survival, protect their language and their culture, and carve out a place for themselves in their country and in the world.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I offer best wishes to Acadians on this very special day.”
