Statement by the Prime Minister on the passing of the Honourable Edwin Goodman

24 August 2006
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today on the passing of the Honourable Edwin Goodman:

“On behalf of all Canadians, I offer condolences to the family and friends of the Hon. Edwin (Eddie) Goodman, O.C., PC, LL.D. Mr. Goodman dedicated his life to serving his country.  His record of achievements, spanning over seven decades reflects the highest standards of patriotism and public service.

“Mr. Goodman, a recipient of the Order of Canada, during his career served as chair of the Royal Ontario Museum, chair and senior partner at Goodmans Law Firm, and co-chair of the 1967 Tory Leadership Convention, to name only a few of his accomplishments.

“Most recently, Prime Minister Mulroney appointed Mr. Goodman to the Security Intelligence Review Committee. Sworn into the Queen’s Privy Council, this appointment reflected the trust Mr. Goodman earned as a decorated soldier in World War II and the many charitable and political roles he undertook with honour and determination.

“My wife Laureen and I extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mr. Goodman.  His memory will live on through them and the many lives he touched during his lifetime.”
