The application of biotechnology raises ethical, moral and novel legal questions. This comprehensive report reviews human rights and biotechnology issues in the context of domestic and international laws and codes. It covers issues related to assisted human reproduction, use of in vitro human embryos, genetic screening of embryos, use of human genetic information, privacy, patents on human materials and indigenous traditional knowledge.

  In the area of biotechnology, Statistics Canada collects information on federal government expenditures on biotechnology research and development (R&D) and the activities of innovative biotechnology firms, through funding under the Canadian Biotechnology Strategy. Based on those data, this document presents an analysis of trends and changes in government support to R&D and the adoption and development of biotechnology in the business sector in Canada since 1997. The document also places the current state of Canada's biotechnology activities in an international context, by drawing on data from OECD countries.
  
  
• First impressions: understanding public views on emerging technologies (September 2005)
  
  In this report, we have chosen to investigate technologies that are in precommercialization or early commercialization stages.  Emerging technologies can be described in a number of ways. These are technologies in the developmental stage of production, perhaps not yet fully exploited by firms. For many of these, basic research may still be taking place and the projections of potential applications remain just that – projected aspirations and hopes.
