Leslie MacKinnon provides a view of the 2006 Liberal leadership race from the convention floor. Stephane Dion rose to victory from fourth place, which happened in part because of a strategic deal he made with rival Gerard Kennedy. It was an example of the collaboration and cooperation that played out between candidates. What few Canadians witnessed were the tensions, emotional debates, and heated exchanges on the convention floor between delegates. Leslie MacKinnon brings us that story.

Unpeopled Shores

The over-fishing of the Grand Banks has led to the destruction of the outports in Newfoundland. The people of the area have no jobs and no money and there are no fish left, though foreign fishing boats are dragging the sea just outside the 200-mile limit. Newfoundlanders say that the Federal government has systematically participated in the destruction of the fisheries by allowing foreign over-fishing. Rex Murphy filed this reports as compensation for the fisheries was about to run out.

Beirut Journey

On board the Ira Petra, a ship on its way to war-ravaged Beirut from the port at Larnaca, Cyprus, Susan Ormiston interviews several of the passengers, including a doctor with Medecins du Monde who plans to help treat the many wounded in southern Lebanon, and others with family and friends in Lebanon. A few talk with Susan about former decades of war and occupation, saddened by the fact that violence has begun again, just as Lebanon had been recovering.

Evil Revisited

In 1994, a doctor from Toronto traveled into one of the darkest moments of recent history. James Orbinski was lead doctor in Rwanda for Médecins sans Frontières, a post which took him to the front lines of the genocide, where he saw atrocities the world chose to ignore. Orbinski is back in Toronto, but he's still involved in Third World medicine through his teachings and his research. He recently returned to Rwanda with video journalist Saša Petricic.
