Library and Archives Canada Pays Tribute to Order of Canada Recipients

Opening of the Exhibition The Order of Canada: They Desire a Better Country

Ottawa - June 7, 2007 - Library and Archives Canada, in collaboration with the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General, presents The Order of Canada: They Desire a Better Country, an exhibition celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Order of Canada.

The exhibition showcases 32 recipients of the Order of Canada who have distinguished themselves in their respective cultural, social, economic and scientific domains. Photographs, biographical notes and quotations are presented in tribute to these individuals and to their remarkable accomplishments. More than 5,600 Canadians, some well known and others to discover, have received the Order of Canada since 1967.

"Canadians who receive the Order of Canada are visionaries from all walks of life. They believe in the idea of a better country and dedicate their numerous talents to serving their community, the nation and humanity," said Ian E. Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada. "We are proud to honour these individuals who are role models for present and future generations."

The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize the exceptional achievements of Canadian citizens. On March 21, 1967, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II approved the creation of the Order of Canada, and Canada's prime minister at the time, the Right Honourable Lester B. Pearson, made the official announcement to Parliament. The first investiture ceremony, presided over by Governor General Roland Michener, took place at Rideau Hall on November 24, 1967.

The Order of Canada: They Desire a Better Country is on view until May 11, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, in the main lobby of Library and Archives Canada, 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa. Admission is free.
