Chemical Substances in Future Batches of the Challenge

Help on accessing alternative formats, such as PDF, MP3 and WAV files, can be obtained in the alternate format help section.

In February, May and August of 2007, the Minister of the Environment and the Minister of Health released Notices in the Canada Gazette for the first three groups of substances identified under the Challenge. Industry and interested stakeholders have been invited to submit any information that may be used to inform risk assessment and to develop and benchmark best practices for risk management and product stewardship. Subsequent groups of substances are being released every three months.

Environment Canada and Health Canada have been developing a batch selection strategy for the remaining substances in the Challenge. The substances in batch 3 have now been launched, and the substances that the Minister of the Environment and the Minister of Health are proposing to assign to upcoming batches of the Challenge (batches 4 through 12) were identified in a Notice in the Canada Gazette entitled Notice of identification of the third batch and the next proposed batches of the remaining substances in the Challenge, published on May 12, 2007.

Next link will open in a new window Canada Gazette Vol. 141, No. 19 - May 12, 2007 (PDF)

Any person may, within 120 days of publication of this notice (ending September 10, 2007), file comments with respect to the proposed batches 5 to 12. The substances assigned to batch 4 have now been finalized, following a 60-day public comment period that ended on July 11, 2007.

Formal notice of identification of substances assigned to a batch will continue to be issued in the Canada Gazette, Part I, 3 months before a challenge is issued for that batch.
