Accessibility

In order to make this site more accessible, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada has employed templates which:

  • are XHTML 1.0 Strict conformant, to improve compatibility with adaptive technologies, handheld devices, browsers and search engines;
  • have been successfully tested on a wide range of adaptive technologies and browser/platform combinations to ensure that Canadians can access Web pages regardless of the technology used;
  • include major components, such as the common menu bar, side menu, and content area that are properly marked up with headings to simplify navigation with a screen reader;
  • employ table-less layout and design to simplify screen reader navigation by reducing the structural complexity of Web pages;
  • improve accessibility by allowing visitors to configure visual elements to meet their accessibility needs;
  • use scaleable fonts and text-based navigational elements to improve accessibility and simplify navigation using adaptive technologies;
  • provide printer-friendly functionality in the Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to render pages more compatible with printers and to prevent printing unnecessary page elements; and
  • separate visual presentation from the document structure.

The A - Z Index is an alphabetical listing by group of subjects available on the Indian and Northern Affairs of Canada's web site.

A list of acronyms and what they stand for has been developed for acronyms commonly used by the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada.

The Search Engine offers quick access to information through bilingual (French or English) keyword or phrases searches. This is particularly useful for users who wish to find specific information. See our Document Types and Audiences for tips on proper operations and syntax.

Hyperlinks on this Site

There are three types of hyperlinks on this site. They can be distinguished by the symbols/icons and alternate text that is associated with each:

  1. red maple leaf and globe   The maple leaf and globe image represents a link to another Government of Canada Internet site. This image will not be acknowledged by assitive technologies as it is for visual representation only. Non-visual users will be notified of the link type via the title text of the link.

  2. www and globe   The www and globe image represents links to an external site on the World Wide Web. This image will not be acknowledged by assitive technologies as it is for visual representation only. Non-visual users will be notified of the link type via title the text of the link.

  3. When no symbol follows the link it is considered to be an internal link. An internal link connects to another part of the main departmental site.
