STATEMENT BY THE HONOURABLE CHUCK STRAHL ON SUCCESSFUL FIRST NATION RATIFICATION OF THE SETON LAKE CUT-OFF SETTLEMENT

Chilliwack (British Columbia) – (November 13, 2007) - The following statement was released by the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians:

“I would like to congratulate the members of the Seton Lake Indian Band, its Council members, the negotiating team and Chief Garry John, on the successful ratification of the Seton Lake Cut-off settlement.

This claim dates back to the early 1900s and I am pleased that we are making such significant progress.  Negotiated settlements are about justice, respect and reconciliation.

Our Government understands the importance of achieving common solutions and building strong and respectful relationships through negotiations. Negotiations lead to “win-win” situations that balance the rights of all Canadians.

Now that the First Nation has ratified the settlement agreement, the next step is ratification by both the Province and Canada.  Once ratified by all parties, compensation would include $600,000 from Canada and the transfer of the administration of 31.6 acres (12.8 hectares) of provincial lands to Canada for the use and benefit of Seton Lake Indian Band. 

Settlements bring hope and new economic opportunities to First Nation communities.  It is in the best interests of all Canadians to bring closure to First Nations’ grievances and put the mistakes of the past behind us.
