Expert Alert - CIHR funding to improve wait times and health services

Experts available to speak about their research in these important areas

Attention: Assignment editors, health, research and science reporters

For immediate release-

2007-42

OTTAWA (October 30, 2007) - Why is drug spending rising? How can we improve patient care and the functioning of health care workers? How do we make the best use of limited home-care services? How can we reduce wait times by speeding-up the process of finding a family doctor?

These are all valuable questions being asked by experts recently awarded funding by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Health researchers in the areas of wait times and health care services are available to speak about their funded research projects and how their work will make a difference for Canadians. The topics and associated researchers are:

Measuring the health impacts of waiting for a joint replacement
Dr. Mark Harrison, CIHR-funded researcher from Queen's University (Kingston)

How can we speed-up the process of finding a family doctor?
Dr. Marie-Dominique Beaulieu, CIHR-funded researcher from CHUM at the University of Montreal (Montreal)

Do rising drug costs equal better health and lower expenditures in other areas? The causes and consequences of spending on drugs
Dr. Steve Morgan, CIHR-funded researcher from University of British Columbia (Vancouver)

When values conflict in health care - How can we increase work satisfaction and retention of nurses?
Drs. Marie Edwards and Susan McClement, CIHR-funded researchers from the University of Manitoba (Winnipeg)

Sharing ownership of care - Optimizing home-care resources by involving patients
Dr. Carol McWilliam, CIHR-funded researcher from the University of Western Ontario (London, Ontario)
