Canadian Biomass Innovation Network

The Canadian Biomass Innovation Network (CBIN) coordinates the Federal Government's interdepartmental research and development (R&D) activities in the area of bioenergy, biofuels, industrial bioproducts and bioprocesses. Natural Resources Canada's Office of Energy Research and Development (NRCan-OERD) is the Government of Canada's coordinator of energy R&D activities, which include managing and funding CBIN.

The following federal funding programs managed by OERD are supporting CBIN:

The Program of Energy Research and Development (PERD) has been in operation for over 30 years. It is the most enduring interdepartmental horizontally managed Science and Technology (S&T) program in the federal government.
The Technology and Innovation Initiative (T&I) is a research program put forth by the Climate Change Plan for Canada in 2003 to advance long-term GHG technologies and strengthen Canada’s technology capacity through early stage R&D. This funding program ends in March 2008.
For the next four years, the recently announced ecoENERGY Technology Initiative (ecoETI) will fund research, development and demonstration (RD&D) to support the next generation energy technologies needed to break through to emissions-free fossil fuel production and use, as well as develop technologies for producing and using energy from other clean sources, such as renewables and bioenergy. The ecoETI "Bio-based Energy Systems" portfolio is managed by CBIN and its objective is to harness the potential for bio‑resources to produce bioenergy, biofuels, industrial bioproducts and bioprocesses to help Canadian industry and communities meet clean air, efficiency and sustainability challenges.

Each of CBIN’s current four areas of activity consists of long term research themes that are managed by a Federal Government lead.

dissemination, etc).
