Welcome

The earth's climate, which has been relatively stable for about 10,000 years, is now changing. Climate change is having a major impact on the earth with environmental, social and economic consequences:

  • Climate change is more pronounced in Northern regions
  • Temperatures in the Arctic are rising twice as fast as the global average
  • Changing rainfall, wind and storm patterns
  • Flooding and erosion of coastal regions
  • Increasing risk of pests and disease
  • Water shortages and droughts
  • Increasing risk of forest fires
  • Receding glaciers
  • Greenland glaciers are moving faster than before
  • Loss and change of habitat for many plant and animal species
  • Impacts to health, transportation and industry in northern communities
  • Greater need for alternative energy sources.

Mounting scientific evidence suggests that climate change may disproportionately impact Aboriginal peoples and northerners whose livelihoods derive from the land, water and other natural resources.

Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) is committed to engaging Aboriginal peoples and northern communities as an integral part of Canada's climate change strategy. It is vital that Aboriginal peoples and northern communities have the knowledge, capacity and tools to adapt to the realities of climate change.
