N-[4-(acetylamino)phenyl]-4-[[5-(aminocarbonyl)-2-chlorophenyl]azo]-3-hydroxynaphthalene-2-carboxamide (Pigment Orange 38)
What is it?
Pigment Orange 38 is a synthetic organic pigment. It is an orange-hued bright reddish powder/crystal that is in transparent or opaque shades.
Where is it found and how is it used?
Pigment Orange 38 is not currently produced in Canada but it is used in the production of many items currently in commerce in this country. Pigment Orange 38 can be found in plastic consumer products, printing inks, paints, coatings, and varnishes. It may also present in crayons and wax.
What are its effects?
Pigment Orange 38 is persistent and bioaccumulative, and can harm aquatic organisms at low concentrations. It is considered that Pigment Orange 38 is capable of having immediate or long-term harmful effects on the environment or biodiversity. However, it does not appear to enter the environment in amounts that are large enough to affect human health.
What are we doing?
Based on the information obtained through the categorization process, this substance has been identified as a high priority for further action. As such, it has been included in the first batch of substances released under the Government of Canada's Challenge to industry and other stakeholders.
Under the Challenge, the Government of Canada will use existing legal tools and the regulatory process to obtain information from industry and other stakeholders on how they are managing this substance. New information will be reviewed by Government of Canada scientists to determine what further actions may be necessary to ensure that the health of Canadians and their environment are protected. If new information is not provided, the Government of Canada will nevertheless take action on a precautionary basis.
