What do I do if my search retrieves no documents?

Making you searches precise

There are several ways you can reduce the number of documents you retrieve when looking for DNOs. You can use any or all of the options below.

You can:

Specify an Industry: Select either Broadcasting or Telecommunications to retrieve documents that only relate to the specified industry.

Choose a Document Type: If you know that you are looking for a specific document type (for example, a decision), elect it from the drop-down list. You do not have to make a selection. By default, the search engine will retrieve all types of documents.

Select a Year: If you know the year a document was released, select it from the drop-down menu.

Search by words or phrases: The most precise way to search is by 'phrase'. The search engine will retrieve only documents that contain the words you entered, in the exact order you typed them.

When you are unsure of the exact phrasing, select the option 'all of the words'. The search engine will find documents that contain all of the words typed in the search box but not necessarily together or in any specific order

If you use the option, 'any of the words', your search will be very broad, since only one of the words needs to appear in a document for it to appear in your results.

CRTC Thesaurus

Terms from the Thesaurus have been used to index CRTC decisions, notices and orders. This allows you to search by subject. DNOs from 2000, 2001, 2002 have been indexed. The best way to make use of this feature is to use the Advanced DNO search and search by keyword. You will find instructions on how to use the Thesaurus when you open it.

What do I do if my search retrieves no documents?

Try any one or a combination of the following suggestions.

  • Make sure you are searching English terms from the English language search page
  • Check your spelling.
  • Search both Broadcasting and Telecommunications documents.
  • Search all document types instead of a specific type.
  • Search all years instead of specifying a year.
  • Try searching using fewer terms.
  • If you searched by phrase, use the same words, but select the 'all of the words' option instead of by phrase.

If you need help locating documents on the site, email us or call us at 1-877-249-CRTC (2782).
