Gold Medal Policing

Research Study Launch

The Canadian Police Research Centre (CPRC) is proud to have collaborated on a groundbreaking study now released.

Gold Medal Policing: Mental Readiness and Performance Excellence examines the reasons why exceptional police officers perform well under challenging situations.

The three year study, led by the University of Ottawas Judy McDonald, shows how high-performing individuals:
achieve consistency in their actions;
are ready on demand;
manage distractions;
remain focused;
and develop effective coping strategies.

Her analysis is based on in-depth interviews of front-line police officers and comparisons with similar studies of other high performance professionals, such as medical surgeons and world-class athletes.

The research was made possible through the partnership and commitment of the University of Ottawa, the Ottawa Police Service and the City of Ottawa and through substantive project contributors such as the Canadian Police Research Centre, the National Research Councils (NRCs) Industrial Research Assistance Program and University of Ottawa's, Institute of Population Health.

It demonstrates the value of frank dialogue with front-line officers in understanding equipment needs and performance. This perspective provides insight for advancing future design and delivery of protective policing equipment.

FPTT Awards

FPTT is an established network of federal public servants committed to working together to enhance their professional capacity and to ensure the expeditious transfer of the value created in federal laboratories. The strength of FPTT is measured by the relationships it builds, the knowledge it helps develop and share, and the technology transfer it enables.

Since 1998 FPTT Technology Transfer Awards have honoured 45 teams and individuals for their work in research and development or the commercialization of its results. Their efforts have fostered an entrepreneurial spirit within the federal government and throughout Canada. The awards program reflects best practices of the public and private sectors to develop techniques, services and products that create jobs, contribute to the economic and social well being of Canadians and cultivate new markets abroad.

Awards are determined by a selection committee composed of individuals from the science and technology community. The committee is guided by several criteria, including the complexity and level of skill required during the technology transfer process; the extent of commercial advancement of the technology; the benefits to Canadian firms or sectors; and the contribution to Canadian competitiveness, economic growth, and standard of living.

The FPTT Excellence in Technology Transfer Award honours the significant achievement of individuals and teams from federal science-based departments and agencies in the transfer of technology from Canadian research organizations to the public or private sector. The award is bestowed upon nominees from FPTT partner organizations who are actively involved in technology transfer and, when appropriate, the private-sector firm.

The FPTT Leadership in Technology Transfer Award honours a federal employee whose creativity and exemplary leadership have strengthened governments capacity to transfer knowledge from federal laboratories to those who are able to exploit it most effectively.

This year, FPTT Awards will be bestowed upon the following teams and individuals:

For Excellence in Technology Transfer:

  • National Research Council of Canada, Institute for Research in Construction, and FireFlex Systems Inc. for the transfer and commercialization of a unique compressed air foam system used to fight fires
  • Communications Research Centre Canada, Advanced Radio Systems Group, for pioneering research and development in the field of Software Defined Radio, which has resulted in growing commercialization of this emerging technology by industry.

For Leadership in Technology Transfer:

  • Dr Steve W Cui, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, for exemplary leadership in the development of inventive food extraction processes and the transfer of flaxseed dehulling technologies.
