BEACHFRONT PROPERTY LOCATION FOR NEW ACCOMMODATIONS FACILITY IN INGONISH

INGONISH, N.S. -- Seaside cottages and a guest house under construction on three acres of beachfront property in Ingonish will help Cape Breton Island's tourism industry meet the growing demand for high-end accommodation facilities.

Lantern Hill & Hollow Beachfront Cottages and B&B Suites features six winterized housekeeping cottages as well as a guest house containing three luxury bed and breakfast suites, common sitting areas for guests and an office. Three full-time seasonal jobs will be created.

The total estimated cost of the project is $830,000. Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC) will make a repayable contribution of $404,000 through the Business Development Program.

"This project will help Cape Breton Island meet the demands of the growing market that seeks large, quality, seaside cottages and opportunity for multi-seasonal experiences. It is also fostering economic growth in partnership with the private sector," said Mark Eyking, Member of Parliament for Sydney-Victoria, speaking on behalf of Gerry Byrne, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and ECBC.

"With assistance from ECBC and the Government of Canada, we are able to achieve our dream of owning and operating a quality tourist facility in one of the world's premier tourism regions," said Peter Harrison, owner, Lantern Hill & Hollow Beachfront Cottages and B&B Suites. The property will be managed by his daughter, Sharon Harrison.

"I worked at the Keltic Lodge for three summers during my high school years and fell in love with Ingonish. Ever since then I've wanted to find a place there to live and now we have created a facility that will allow others to fully enjoy this wonderful part of Cape Breton," said Sharon Harrison. "We are extremely proud of the accommodations we offer travellers and feel the style and decor suits our idyllic beachfront setting. Our success will enhance Cape Breton Island's tourism industry."

The project also includes the marketing activities required to ensure the successful promotion of the facility. A website (http://www.lanternhillandhollow.com) is part of the marketing. The owners hope to achieve a four-star rating for both the cottages and the guest house with the Canada Select rating program. The facility will be open in May 2002.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2000 budget and is therefore built into the existing financial framework.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA's programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
