Glace Bay’s South Street Multi-Use Facility

Glace Bay, NS-
Plans to re-develop the South Street field into a hub of community activity were announced today by Rodger Cuzner, MP for
Cape Breton-Canso, on behalf of the Honourable Joseph McGuire, Minister for Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC) and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

The South Street Multi-Purpose Development Company Limited, in association with major sponsors will redevelop the existing South Street Field into a multi-use community facility. The project will see the construction of a first class venue with the potential to accommodate a wide variety of national and international events.

The specifics of the project include a commons area, signage, landscaping, and general upgrades to the facility. The commons will offer a field that will accommodate sporting events and provide service vendors with a site to do business. It will enable the community to host a wide variety of outdoor events such as concerts, cultural events, markets and sporting events.

“This is the perfect complement to the recently completed downtown revitalization, and the Government of Canada is pleased to support this venture,” says Rodger Cuzner, MP for Cape Breton-Canso. “The South Street facility will be a focal point for the community, providing a wide range of activities for young and old.”

The total cost of the project is $550,000, with ECBC will make a
non-repayable contribution of $300,000 through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency’s Strategic Community Investment Fund (SCIF).

The Strategic Community Investment Fund provides $135 million over five years to help communities in Atlantic Canada create an environment that encourages and enhances economic development.

Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation offers programs in support of economic development initiatives and is responsible for delivering ACOA's programs on Cape Breton Island and in the Mulgrave area.
