Canadian Grain Commission review

The requirement that the Canadian Grain Commission act "in the interest of grain producers" should not be removed from the CGC's formal mandate, according to a Jan. 9 letter from Ken Ritter, chair of the CWB's farmer-controlled board of directors, to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-food. Ritter was responding to the committee's recommendations regarding the COMPAS Review of the Canadian Grain Commission.

COMPAS Inc., a Toronto-based public opinion and customer research consulting firm, was commissioned by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in February 2006 to conduct a comprehensive and independent review of the Canada Grain Act and the Canadian Grain Commission; it released its report in September 2006. The House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture responded to the COMPAS report in December 2006.
