Parks Canada in partnership with the Province of British Columbia is conducting a feasibility study to decide if this area is a suitable candidate to include in the system of national marine conservation areas. Consultations and feedback are an important part of the study.

Estuarine areas like the Strait of Georgia are among the most productive marine ecosystems in the world. In the Strait, this high productivity is due to fresh water from the Fraser River mixing with the ocean waters flooding through Juan de Fuca and Haro Straits. A national marine conservation area (NMCA) would conserve a representative portion of this vital marine ecosystem while also allowing human uses to continue in an ecologically sustainable manner. An NMCA can assist coastal communities to remain sustainable.

Several marine areas across Canada are being studied as potential additions to the national marine conservation areas system. The intent of this system is to conserve and present representative samples of Canada's rich and diverse marine heritage.
