Environment Canada's Enforcement Branch

Enforcement Branch

During fiscal year 2005-2006, Environment Canada’s (EC) Enforcement Branch completed its restructuring process which resulted in the creation of a Chief Enforcement Officer (CEO) led organization comprised of three directorates: Environmental Enforcement, Wildlife Enforcement and Enforcement Services.

The CEO has direct authority over all enforcement operations within the Department through the National Directors of Environmental Enforcement and Wildlife Enforcement at headquarters and the Directors of Enforcement within the regions for both those subject areas.  In order to coordinate and provide a number of services such as, training and learning for enforcement officers, operational policy development, regulatory review and strategic policy and planning for the efficient functioning of Environmental and Wildlife Enforcement, the CEO has established a third National Directorate, namely the Enforcement Services, during this fiscal year.

As of April 1, 2006, enforcement officers both in the field and in headquarters are benefiting from a unified, coherent vision for which the CEO is both accountable and responsible to the Minister.

The Enforcement Branch aims to create and sustain the most effective and efficient environmental and wildlife law enforcement function in fulfillment of statutory requirements under the Acts administered by the Department by taking action against those who violate environmental and wildlife laws.  This ensures that federal environmental and wildlife laws and regulations are respected and that enforcement measures are taken against alleged offenders.
