Fish Harvester Fined $500 for Lobster Fishing Violation

CLARENVILLE, NL - Anthony Hickey of Southern Harbour was convicted of unlawfully fishing for lobster without having all his lobster traps tagged and was fined $500.00.

On May 9, 2007, while carrying out regular fishing gear checks in the area of Davis Cove, Placentia Bay, fishery officers from Placentia Detachment detected the violation. Mr. Hickey’s lobster traps, with his commercial fishing vessel number marked on the buoys, were hauled to the surface and checked to see if they were tagged as per his condition of licence. Twelve (12) of Mr. Hickey’s traps were found to be untagged. He was convicted on August 28, 2007 in Clarenville Provincial Court.

Harbour Grace

Gerald Robinson of Upper Gullies was convicted of recreational fishing for groundfish during a closed time and was fined $100.00.

On July 30, 2005, fishery officers from the Bay Roberts detachment conducted a vessel patrol near the community of Conception Harbour in Conception Bay. The officers approached a vessel and observed Mr. Robinson and another male, fishing with handlines and catching Atlantic cod. The other individual was previously charged and convicted in this matter. Mr. Robinson was convicted on February 9, 2007 in Harbour Grace Provincial Court.
