The School Idling Calculator

Calculate the potential impact a school idling initiative would have if parents and staff at your school committed to reducing idling of their vehicles!

This interactive calculator will help you determine how much fuel, GHG emissions and money you will save by cutting back on vehicle idling.

Simply indicate the number of drivers that have committed to not idle and the number of minutes per day that you think is reasonable for drivers to avoid idling. The calculator shows you the potential emissions, fuel reduction, and dollar savings that you can achieve!

STEP 1 – Select the desired province or territory



STEP 2 – Select the average idling time

The average Canadian idles 5 minutes a day not including warming up their vehicle on cold winter mornings! If idling times differ in your community, please select a time ranging from 1 to 10 minutes. This will be used to calculate the impacts of idling across the selected locations.

STEP 3 – Enter the average cost per litre (optional)

The average cost of fuel for the selected province is provided. If you would like to use another average fuel cost to calculate the idling impact, please enter it below.

STEP 4 – Select the number of committed parents and staff

Select the number of drivers that have committed to reduce their idling 5 minute(s) per day. This will be used to calculate the total impact of drivers that reduce their idling.
