Social Assistance Program

Program Description

The Social Assistance Program helps First Nations individuals and families living on reserves meet their basic need for food, clothing and shelter. It also funds special needs allowances for goods and services that are important to healthy living, such as basic furniture or food that forms part of a physician-recommended diet.

Program history/background

The Social Assistance Program is part of INAC's Social Development Program. These programs and services are delivered by First Nations to community members on reserves. In 2000-2001, 534 First Nations administered their own programs. This figure does not include First Nations with self-government arrangements.
