The Indian and Inuit Art Centres

Program Description

The Exhibition/Acquisition Program provides established and emerging Aboriginal artists with an opportunity to exhibit and sell their works. Money from sales goes directly to the artists. The program also helps artists develop an exhibition history that is often needed when artists apply for grants from arts funding institutions. Works from the INAC collection are loaned to major art galleries and museums in Canada and abroad for exhibitions and are displayed in INAC offices at headquarters and regionally.

Program history/background

The Indian and Inuit Art Centres were created to support the development of Aboriginal artists working in traditional and contemporary art forms, including painting, drawing, print making, sculpture and photography. The Indian and Inuit Art Gallery opened in 1991 on the main level of INAC headquarters in Gatineau, Quebec. The Exhibition/Acquisition Program was formerly known as the Artist-in-Residence Program.

Program Eligibility

Artists are selected through a national jury of three members of the Aboriginal arts community.
