Indian Register

The Registrar at INAC is responsible for the maintenance of the Indian Register, a record of everyone who is registered as an Indian under the Indian Act. Once you acquire Indian Status, you will be entitled to receive programs and services such as specific tax exemptions, non-insured health benefits, dental and eye care.

The Registrar also maintains band lists for First Nations that have not opted to assume control of their own membership.

You may be eligible if:

• both your parents are eligible for Status
• you lost Status by marrying a non-Indian man
• you lost Status because your father was not a Status Indian
• you lost Status because your parents applied to give up Status and First Nation membership through something called "enfranchisement"
• you qualified for Indian Status before the Indian Act was changed in 1985

You may also be eligible for registration if only one of your parents is eligible. Remember, you must apply for your Indian Status. It is not automatic. To order an Indian Status Registration package or to get more details, call toll free at 1-800-567-9604.
