Tools for Schools

SchoolbagChildren spend most of their school day indoors. Good indoor air quality is a key element for favourable learning environments for students, teachers and staff, because it nurtures a sense of comfort, health and well-being.

Indoor air quality in schools is particularly important since poor indoor air can potentially affect the health of students and staff. It can lower academic performance and increase the costs with respect to fixing problems.

Health Canada has developed the Tools for Schools Action Kit to help school administrators, facility planners and educators create a safe and healthy learning environment.

How you can help

The Indoor Air Quality: Tools for Schools Action Kit is a practical tool to help schools understand and address indoor air quality problems. It contains background information, pollution control strategies, references to additional resources and information and checklists for different school areas.

This clear and easily-applied information can be used to improve school environments, to help prevent indoor air quality problems and to resolve problems if present. It recommends practical actions that can be carried out by school staff without the need for training, and it is flexible enough to conform to the specific needs of each individual school. This kit represents an investment in people and school facilities to nurture healthier school environments.
