Chaplaincy

Faith Community Resources

These resources are meant to inspire and assist faith communities at all levels to learn about and practise restorative justice values and principles.

An Invitation to Justice

An Invitation from the Interfaith Committee on Chaplaincy in the Correctional Service of Canada

Compared with many other countries, Canada is a peaceful and safe place to live. We cherish that peace and safety. At the same time, we are concerned about the growing level of public outrage over crime and its effects on our society. We see the pain of the many victims of crime. We feel called to look for justice that deals with crime honestly and fairly, justice that leads to the healing of individuals, families and society as a whole. The festering wounds of fear and outrage harm the well-being and the fabric of our society.

Spiritual Resources...
Individuals and groups from many faith perspectives have provided many of the faith-based texts and prayers on Restorative Justice which are found here. Interfaith prayer services and reports on interfaith events are included.

Living Examples...
As long as Restorative Justice principles and values remain simply theory, they have little power to transform and heal. These texts, some written in the first person by victims, others by those who have been found guilty of offending and people close to them, others by persons who know these principles and values are relevant to their everyday lives are moving examples of the difference Restorative Justice can make in people’s lives.

Youth Resources...
Children are demonstrating their immense capacity to learn the skills and embody the attitudes and values of Restorative Justice through peer mediation, conflict resolution and talking circles in their schools. A few stories and activities are provided that could be used in the context of Sunday School.

Books...
Featured here are books that touch on the spiritual roots of Restorative Justice.
