Activities held during CAC Awareness Week
Ontario

GRAND VALLEY INSTITUTION

LEARN ABOUT YOUR CAC
On November 23, 2006 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, Grand Valley Institution CAC, in partnership with Correctional Service Canada, hosted a staff orientation session to educate staff members on the process for safe reintegration of offenders, citizen involvement and the role of the CAC within the institution and community. Approximately 30 staff members attended the event. Warden Brinda Wilson-DeMuth made opening comments and CAC Chair Deb Schlichter provided a Power Point presentation outlining the CAC's Mission Statement, roles and objectives and a short history of the early days of, the CAC at GVI. In addition, Certificates of Appreciation were presented, in their absence, to previous CAC members. The event was very well received by staff and deemed a success. Positive comments and questions were generated which lead to a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the CAC.

REGIONAL TREATMENT CENTRE

STAFF APPRECIATION
On November 23, 2006 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, Regional Treatment Centre CAC, in partnership with Correctional Service Canada, hosted a staff appreciation event. CAC Chair, Florence Davies, went from floor to floor discussing CAC activities while staff enjoyed food prepared by Pittsburg Institution. The event was deemed a positive experience with staff expressing appreciation of this gesture by the CAC.

KINGSTON PENITENTIARY

STAFF AWARENESS LUNCHEON
On November 20, 2006 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m, the Kingston Penitentiary CAC, in partnership with Correctional Service Canada, hosted a luncheon catered by the cook Certification Challengers from Pittsburg Institution. The event was held in the gym where a Power Point presentation of the role and mandate of the CAC ran continuously. The luncheon was attended by approximately 125 staff members including the Regional CAC Coordinator, parole officers, teachers, chaplaincy, aboriginal Elder and Liaison officers, security, management, psychology, administrative services, informatics and social development as well as inmate committee members. The event was deemed a great success in raising staff awareness about CAC members and the role of the CAC in the institution.

BEAVER CREEK/FENBROOK & MUSKOKA PAROLE

BRING A FRIEND TO CAC
On November 22, 2006 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, the Beaver Creek/Fenbrook & Muskoka Parole CAC, in partnership with Correctional Service Canada, hosted the "Bring a Friend" event to educate and recruit interested members of the community to consider joining the CAC. The event was attended by CAC members and 7 guests. Guests were welcomed by FMI Warden Jim Marshall and BCI Associate Wording Management Services Dave Whitton and toured both Fenbrook and Beaver Creek Institutions. A Question and Answer session with refreshments supplied by the CAC followed. The event was deemed a success in raising the community's awareness of the role of the CAC in the institution.

BATH INSTITUTION

STAFF AWARENESS
During CAC Awareness Week, Bath Institution CAC, in partnership with Correctional Service Canada, focused on various informal information sharing and staff awareness activities, including discussion at the daily Operations Meeting on to all staff November 20, 2006, and shift briefings of correctional officers. An email was sent in advance of CAC week with a follow-up email outlining CAC Awareness Week, activities, portal location and other relevant information. Signs were posted and flyers/handouts distributed to staff. CAC member Keith Fairbanks was on hand to 'meet and greet' and answer questions from staff members.

JOYCEVILLE INSTITUTION

STAFF AWARENESS
During CAC Awareness Week, Joyceville Institution CAC, in partnership with Correctional Service Canada, distributed pamphlets and were available to staff and inmates to answer questions and share information.

OTTAWA PAROLE OFFICE

CAC AWARENESS DAY AT CSC'S NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS (NHQ)
On November 22, 2006 from 8:00 am to 12:45 pm, the Ottawa Parole Office CAC, in partnership with Correctional Service Canada, hosted a panel presentation to NHQ staff. CAC members discussed the role and mandate of CACs with particular emphasis on the role and activities of the local CAC. The event was well received with approximately 30 staff members in attendance and participating in activities such as a CAC Quiz and Word-Find.

STAFF APPRECIATION AT THE OTTAWA PAROLE OFFICE
On November 23, 2006 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, the Ottawa Parole Office CAC, in partnership with Correctional Service Canada, hosted a staff appreciation event to thank staff for all their hard work. The event was deemed a success, with 20 staff members and 5 CAC members in attendance to participate in informal discussion while enjoying fresh coffee and baked goods provided by the CAC.

PRESENTATION TO THE FEDERATION OF CANADIAN MUNICIPALITIES' (FCM) JOINT COMMITTEE ON COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS
On November 21, 2006 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the Ottawa Parole Office CAC, in partnership with Correctional Service Canada, provided a presentation on community corrections and the role of the CAC to the FCM Joint Committee on Community Corrections. The discussion encompassed such issues as community profile, best practices, the challenges faced by the Ottawa Parole Office as well as local CAC activities and initiatives. The presentation was well received by the 10 committee members in attendance.

HAMILTON PAROLE OFFICE

STAFF AWARENESS EVENTS
During CAC Awareness Week, the Hamilton Parole Office CAC, in partnership with Correctional Service Canada, attended a staff meeting at the Hamilton Parole Office to raise awareness of the role and objectives of the CAC. The event was deemed a success with 16 staff members in attendance.

During CAC Awareness Week, the Hamilton Parole Office CAC, in partnership with Correctional Service Canada, attended a resident meeting at the Hamilton CCC to present information on the role and objectives of the CAC. The event was well received, with 3 staff members and 16 residents in attendance.

PETERBOROUGH PAROLE /WARKWORTH INSTITUTION

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE PRESENTATION
On October 13, 2006, the Peterborough Parole Office CAC, in partnership with Correctional Service Canada, delivered a presentation through their "Restorative Justice Initiative" at Sir Sanford Fleming College in Peterborough. This event was hosted by the Law and Justice Department and in conjunction with the CSC Ontario Region's Chaplaincy Volunteer Conference. The goal was to reach out to the local community of Peterborough to increase awareness of the role and objectives of the local CAC as well as Restorative Justice issues.

The presentation featured speaker Jim Stephenson, the father of Christopher, whose name is noted in relation to "Christopher's Law" dealing with the registration of sexual offenders.

Approximately 90 people were in attendance, including MP Dean Del Mastro, local police officers and various community leaders. The event was deemed a success, with various other speaking engagements resulting from the presentation at this conference.

SUDBURY PAROLE OFFICE

OUTREACH, MEDIA INTERVIEWS
On November 23, 2006, a radio interview with CAC Interim Chair Bob Walsh was aired on the local CBC radio station. Mr. Walsh was interviewed by reporter Dan Lessard on the roles and objectives of the CACS in general and as specifically related to the Sudbury Parole Office.

In addition, during CAC Awareness Week, the Sudbury Parole Office CAC, in partnership with Correctional Service Canada, sent letters to the North Bay Nugget and the Sudbury Star. The CAC membership chose this plan to increase public awareness of the CAC and to bolster recruitment.
