Value-added incentive program

The CWB has announced a new value-added direct delivery incentive program (VIP) that will put more money into farmers' pockets.

Farmers who deliver their wheat and barley directly to mills and malting plants in Western Canada that are licensed and bonded by the Canada Grain Commission will earn a $3 per tonne premium.

The CWB will pay farmers for direct delivery via a cheque mailed twice per crop year (after December 31 and after July 31).

The VIP is part of the CWB's on-going commitment to value-added processing on the Prairies. The program will provide earlier delivery opportunities for farmers, will reduce storage and carry costs for the CWB and has the potential to lower farmers' handling costs.

Current CWB carrying costs range between $3 and $4 dollars per tonne when grain sits in the elevator; money that is paid to the handling company. Through the VIP, money that would have been paid to a grain company will instead go to farmers. Millers and maltsters will also benefit from more timely access to the grade and quantity of wheat, durum and malting barley required.

Getting the VIP-premium is easy. The CWB will automatically issue cheques for direct delivery premiums based on cash tickets submitted by mills and malting plants.
