Japan-Canada Joint Health Research Program

September 2006 Competition

The program, established in 2003, is jointly managed and funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the CIHR Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA), the Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health (IHDCYH) and the Institute of Aging (IA). Its aim is to promote the development of scientific co-operation between scientists from universities or affiliated research organizations in Japan and Canada through the support of collaborative research project grants.

The CIHR Institutes provide funding for applications relevant to their mandates and research priorities:

  1. The Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA) supports research to enhance mental health, neurological health, vision, hearing, and cognitive functioning and to reduce the burden of related disorders through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation.
  2. The Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health (IHDCYH) supports research to enhance maternal, child, and youth health and to address causes, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, short- and long-term support systems, and palliation for a wide range of health concerns associated with reproduction, early development, childhood, and adolescence.
  3. The Institute of Aging (IA) supports research that promotes healthy aging and addresses causes, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation for a wide range of conditions associated with aging.

Applications submitted to the 2006 competition were reviewed by CIHR and JSPS. The applications' final ratings and ranking were obtained by considering the assessment from both the CIHR and JSPS peer review committees.

A total of 19 applications were received in response to the program. The table below identifies the number of applications received and approved for funding.
