Canada's future prosperity depends on having a critical mass of Canadian health scientists with the international knowledge and intercultural skills necessary to meet globalization challenges. CIHR is committed to ensuring that Canada's future health scientists are internationally-connected.
This section is aimed at keeping Canadian health/medical students and postdoctoral fellows abreast of CIHR training programs and fellowships that will enable them to train abroad, as well as enable foreign postdoctoral researchers to train in a Canadian research environment.
CIHR will offer the scholarships through its Strategic Training Initiative in Health Research (STIHR). Through the STIHR, CIHR funds with partners almost 90 Research Training Programs across Canada in virtually every area of health research. Each training program consists of a group of health research mentors/educators who work collaboratively to offer research training to trainees at one or multiple sites across Canada.
To view the opportunity, please type the specific name of the grant or award in the Search Term(s) in the new CIHR Funding Opportunity Database. For example, type "Fellowship - Japan-Canada (200-2008)" and select search.
This program is directed towards highly qualified and motivated clinicians who have been identified by a Canadian medical school or dental school as having strong potential to become clinician scientists.
The program has two phases. Phase 1 provides stipends for up to six years of training support. Phase 2 provides a contribution to the salary of the recipient for up to six years.
The registration deadline is August 15, 2007.
This program is restricted to current holders of Phase 1 awards. Phase 2 provides a contribution to the salary of the recipient for up to six years.
This program is designed to provide outstanding Clinician Scientists the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their independence in initiating and conducting health research through provision of a contribution to their salary.
The candidate needs a commitment from the nominating medical or dental school or affiliated institution that the successful candidate will be offered a full-time faculty or equivalent position as a clinician-scientist at the start of the Phase 2 award. This commitment is required at the time of the initial application and with each request of renewal. The award must be held in a Canadian medical or dental school or affiliated institution. The candidate must maintain an active Canadian license during the tenure of the award.
The registration deadline is August 15, 2007.
Doctoral Research Awards are intended to provide special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a PhD degree in a health-related field in Canada or abroad. These candidates are expected to have an exceptionally high potential for future research achievement and productivity.
The program is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada at the time of application.
The research for which support is being sought should be under the supervision of a researcher who holds research funds obtained through a recognized competitive peer review process. These awards are normally held at Canadian institutions, but applications may be made for awards to be held outside of Canada.
Funds are also available through this competition to support Doctoral Research Award applications in specific research areas. For more detailed information see the Doctoral Research Award Priority Announcement (Specific Research Areas) in the CIHR Funding Opportunity Database.
The registration deadline is September 3rd, 2007.
Fellowships provide support for highly qualified candidates at the post-PhD or post-health professional degree stages to add to their experience by engaging in health research either in Canada or abroad. The program is open to both Canadians and citizens of other countries.
Funds are also available through this competition to support Fellowship award applications in specific research areas. For more detailled information see the Fellowship: Priority Announcements (Specific Research Areas) in the CIHR Funding Opportunity Database.
There are two application deadlines: October 1, 2007 and February 1, 2008.
The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Fellowships Program provides opportunities for postdoctoral researchers to conduct, under the guidance of their hosts, cooperative research with leading research groups in Japanese universities and other institutions. The program aims to help such researchers advance their own research while contributing to the advancement of research in Japan and in Canada.
CIHR cooperates with the JSPS by nominating Canadian health researchers to participate in the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. CIHR will nominate a maximum of eight postdoctoral researchers for this program per fiscal year (April 1 - March 31).
The application deadline is October 1, 2007
The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) provides graduate students in health research with an eight-week research experience in Japan, an introduction to the science and science policy infrastructure in Japan, and an orientation to the culture and language. CIHR is one of the nominating Canadian authorities for this program.
JSPS representatives will meet with the recipients upon their arrival in Japan. The first week of the program will be dedicated to an orientation session, including an introduction to the language, culture and research systems of the host country, as well as activities. The following seven weeks (approximately) will be spent working on research activities at the host institution.
For additional information, consult the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).
The application deadline is November 1, 2007.For more information, we recommend that you contact the principal investigator of the relevant STIHR.
