A Branch of the Correctional Operations and Programs Sector Correctional Service of Canada
Working to advance corrections policy, programs and management practices through applied research
Located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Role
The primary role of the Research Branch at Correctional
Service of Canada is to conduct an applied program of
research that advances effective and efficient corrections
towards the goals of crime prevention and public protection.
To accomplish this, the Research Branch is organized and
managed to deliver an applied program of research that flows from
the Service’s Mission. More specifically, research that responds to
current strategic objectives (such as Safe Reintegration, Secure
Institutions, Community Engagement, Drug Strategy, Aboriginal
People, Women Offenders, Violent Offenders, Program
Accreditation) but also anticipates new areas of concern (such as
Globalization, Public Health, Quality of Life, Staff/Executive
Recruitment and Retention).
The Research Branch links Canadian federal/provincial
territorial and international correctional efforts; encourages
active collaboration with other federal departments, the
academic research community, non-government organizations
and other jurisdictions; and balances the conduct of applied
research with the effective communication and dissemination of
findings.
Goals
Meet the expanding requirement for applied research related to
corrections policy, programming and management practices as well
as specialist training.
Provide correctional and academic personnel in Canada as well as
from other countries with opportunities to conduct research on
offenders and related issues of concern to correctional agencies.
Establish a cooperative and complementary relationship with
existing research groups, criminal justice associations, and nongovernment
organizations to ensure that research needs on
corrections are met and to avoid duplication.
Utilize, promote and facilitate the research and development
capabilities and resources of Canada in responding to identified
needs in corrections. This includes universities, colleges,
correctional management training and other schools throughout
Canada.
Provide research skills and developmental opportunities to
correctional personnel and the academic community not available
through government programs or beyond the "in-house" training
capacity of most public and private corrections organizations.
