Institute of Infection and Immunity (III)

Workshops, Symposia and Conferences

For workshops and symposia taking place before April 1, 2008 the application described below must be used.

For workshops and symposia taking place after April 1, 2008 applications must be submitted to the "Meetings, Planning and Dissemination Grant" program of III through ResearchNet.  The next program launch is scheduled for December 10, 2007 with an application deadline of February 1, 2008. The program will be available through the funding opportunities search webpage.

The CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity (III) has a mandate to promote and support excellence in internationally recognized research in the areas of infection and immunity. The Institute interacts with scientists, community groups, non-governmental health organizations and international researchers to identify research priorities, establish partnerships and undertake collaborative research initiatives.

Program

The III will normally provide support for workshops, symposia and national and international conferences held in Canada, which have a direct relevance to research in the areas of infection and immunity.

Workshops/symposia/conferences can focus on special initiatives which will give new strategic direction for future research in Canada. Funding for such workshops/symposia/conferences is at the discretion of the Institute and is completely dependent on relevance to the III mandate and strategic goals.

The III defines a workshop as a meeting of a limited number of persons (15-30) individually invited to address specific questions or problems important to infection and immunity health research in Canada, with the purpose of reaching a consensus on recommendations or conclusions leading to an improved focus on research issues.

The III defines a symposium as a scientific educational seminar or series of scientific meetings with areas of importance to a significant number of Canadian investigators and having direct relevance to infection and immunity health research. These meetings and symposia should be national in scope and open to all relevant stakeholders.

The III defines a conference as an arranged assembly of researchers brought together with a common purpose of addressing areas of scientific value. Institute financial support is limited to conferences with content focused primarily in areas of infection and immunity.

Application Procedure

In order to apply, applicants are required to use the application form [ PDF (fillable, 255 KB) | Help ] for workshop/symposium/conference support.

Applicants should forward the completed form to the Institute of Infection and Immunity. Applicants must also indicate which other CIHR Institute, if any, may be relevant to the event in the area specified on the application form. Applicants should indicate the relevance of the event to the mandates of each of the Institutes specified. When the III is specified as the lead Institute, III will coordinate funding with other Institutes. It is anticipated that individuals working in a wide variety of disciplines across the III mandate may be interested in applying for additional funding from various sources. Applicants must clearly list partners, and indicate their contribution to the organization of the proposed workshop/symposium/conference.

Although there are currently no deadlines to submit an application for such support, the III encourages those applying for funding to forward their applications a minimum of two months prior to the intended date of the proposed workshop/symposium/meeting. Please forward your full applications to the following address:

Evaluation and Funding

Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

In the interests of funding a range of initiatives with limited resources, the III will normally provide up to $5,000 in support for appropriately justified workshops/symposia/conferences. In cases where higher amounts are requested, applications will be reviewed by a subcommittee of the Institute Advisory Board, and such applications must thoroughly document the specific reasons for the increased support requested.

The Institute of Infection and Immunity will normally render a decision within 30 days of receiving the application. Where additional Institutes are recommended as funding partners, more time may be required for a final decision.

Reports

All applicants receiving funding from the III are required to submit a summary within 90 days of the event. The report at minimum must include a program or agenda, executive summary of event outcomes and a financial report summarizing income and expenditures from all sources, with specific reference to the funds provided by the III. Additional reporting requirements may be specified in the letter of award.
