Workshops and Symposia

Research on Aging Advancement Program (RAAP)


Support for activities such as workshops, consensus meetings, network and partnership development, and other activities intended explicitly for the advancement of Canadian aging-related health research and its translation.

Introduction

The CIHR Institute of Aging (IA) wishes to support activities that will build and sustain the Canadian research on aging community and lead to excellence in research and knowledge translation within its priority topics of:

Timelines
Applications will be accepted 3 times per year. Funding will not normally be granted for activities that have been completed or held prior to the notification date.
Spring 2007 Fall  2007 Winter 2007/8  
May 1 September 5 January 4 2008 Full proposals must be received in electronic format by this date.
May 31 October 16 February 15 2008 Notification of decision will be prior to or on this date.
Duration of Funding Up to one-year, non-renewable.
Funding The maximum amount per grant is $10,000.
Funds Available The total funds available per fiscal year is $150,000.

Program Objectives

The objectives of the Research on Aging Advancement Program (RAAP) are to:

Eligible Areas

Research and knowledge translation within and across CIHR's four research themes: Bio-medical, Clinical, Health Services, and, Social, Cultural, Environmental and Population Health will be required to achieve the goal of advancing knowledge in the field of aging to improve the quality of life and the health of older Canadians. The 5 priority topics through which the CIHR IA aims to meet this goal are listed above.

* Generally, support for international activities will be approved ONLY if designed specifically to spotlight CIHR IA, Canadian researchers on aging, and the work or programs funded by the CIHR IA.

Mechanisms of Support

One year, non-renewable grants to a maximum of $10,000 will be awarded 3 times annually. Annual or recurring meetings or events are not eligible for funds within this program. Groups having similar composition of participants and/or objectives are eligible to receive only one grant per 2 calendar years. See below for instructions on how to apply to this Program.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants include investigators holding research appointments at a Canadian institution, as well as professional associations and NGOs whose main focus of activity lies within one or more of CIHR IA's priority topics. Collaborators may be from outside of the traditional research fields and could include recognized experts in communications, marketing, education, fine arts, etc. Applicants are strongly encouraged to secure partial funding from other sources.

In the case of initiatives for which the maximum grant will not cover full costs, the applicant(s) must show that the additional funding has been applied for, if not already secured.

Peer Review Process and Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be reviewed by senior CIHR IA staff. Where there is a perceived conflict of interest, applications will be reviewed by senior staff of another CIHR Institute. Based on the total funds available for the initiative, top-ranked applications within each competition will be funded.

It will be incumbent on the applicant(s) to identify how their proposed initiative meets one of more of the objectives of the Research on Aging Advancement Program, and to outline the anticipated benefits relative to the proposed costs.

How to Apply for Funding

Proposal - In a maximum of 2,500 words, include under the following headings:

  1. Title of event or activity; and its key topic(s)
  2. A list of 5-10 key words
  3. Name(s) and affiliations of three main applicants and how they meet the eligibility criteria;
  4. A statement of the planned objectives, how they align with the RAAP objectives, and how they address one or more of CIHR IA's 5 priority topics;
  5. A summary work plan, including the organizational and administrative arrangements, milestones, and schedule;
  6. A rationale for the constitution of the proposed group of participants , including collaborators, stakeholders, international participants and relevant partners;
  7. Follow-on plan of activities to disseminate, translate and ensure impact of the outcomes.

Budget - In a maximum of 1 page, include a budget for the proposed activities, with justification (e.g. approximate number of attendees, number of nights' accommodation) under the following categories:

  1. Travel and subsistence of participants
  2. Communications costs
  3. Meeting rooms and associated meeting costs
  4. Administrative and secretarial support
  5. Publication/dissemination of outcomes
  6. Other costs
  7. Contributions requested/expected from other partners

Letters of support - Attach any letters of support (financial or otherwise) from partners of any type, confirming their involvement and support of the planned initiative.

Funding notification - successful applicants will be emailed on or before the notification date for the relevant competition. Funds will be sent only on receipt of the name and full address of the Institution's finance officer. Funds will take 4 to 6 weeks to be transferred once this information has been received.

Annex I - Financial Reporting

A financial report itemizing the use of the CIHR IA funds must be submitted to CIHR IA within 3 months of the completion of the funded activity. A reporting spreadsheet will be sent to successful applicants with their funding announcement and will include the following cost categories:
