The Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health is one of thirteen institutes, each with a specific focus, that together make up the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). CIHR promotes the creation of new knowledge and advances its translation into improved health for Canadians, more effective health products and services, and a strengthened health care system.
The mandate of the ICRH is to support research into the causes, mechanisms, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation for a wide range of conditions associated with the heart, lung, brain (stroke), blood vessels, blood, critical and intensive care, and sleep. ICRH provides research support through a growing number of strategic research grants, and capacity building programs.
In addition, ICRH embraces a range of research from fundamental bio-medical and clinical research, to research on health systems, health services, the health of populations, societal and cultural dimensions of health and environmental influences on health.
Our Roadmap for the Future
The Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory health along with its Advisory Board members has identified a number of research priorities to improve circulatory and respiratory health of Canadians:
Scientific Director
Each of the 13 institutes are led by a Scientific Director, whose role includes: building Institute and research capacity; establishing and nurturing partnerships; fostering networking, knowledge dissemination and communication, working as part of CIHR management team; as well as conducting research. The Scientific Director is in turn aided by an Institute Advisory Board (IAB). Dr. Peter Liu is the Scientific Director of ICRH.
Institute Advisory Board (IAB)
The Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH) represents a wide range of researchers and policy advisors. Members of the IAB provide support and guidance to Dr. Peter Liu, the Scientific Director in aligning Institute activities with the Institute's goals of supporting outstanding research, enhancing research capacity, building national and international partnerships, and advancing circulatory and respiratory health in Canada and around the world.
