Message from Dr. Alan Bernstein, CIHR President, about ICR's Transition

At the end of July 2008, Dr. Phil Branton, founding Scientific Director of the CIHR Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), will conclude his term. Dr. Branton has a well-earned reputation for his commitment to and enthusiasm for health research, his collegial and inclusive approach, and his unique sense of humour.

Although this transition is still almost one year away, I would like to thank Phil for his outstanding leadership and vision in establishing ICR. In doing so, he has brought a new energy and dynamism to Canadian cancer research. In his role as co-chair of the Canadian Cancer Research Alliance, Phil has also led the country into developing a coherent and integrated approach to cancer research -a first for Canada.

Over the coming year, ICR staff in Montreal and Ottawa, the Institute's Advisory Board, and senior CIHR management will continue to work together to ensure that this leadership transition proceeds as efficiently and smoothly as possible.

CIHR will soon begin looking for a new Scientific Director for ICR. I am confident we will once again succeed in recruiting an outstanding individual who will continue to build on the Institute's successes.

Sincerely,

Dr. Alan Bernstein, O.C., FRSC
President
